"Chatham, Vas 9~28-1883-Sawney Younger, Reuben King,and
Isaac iivans, three young negroes were hung here today for
the murder of William EK. Shephard last month, The executio
was private, only about 15 persons witnessing. Younger's
neck was broken and the other two died from strangulation.
All threeprotested their innocence to the last. The drop
fell at 12:30 pm. A d&tachment of the Pittsylvania Guards
acted as escord and did guard duty. There was quite a larg
crowd in the vicinity of the place of execution but there
were no disturbances. Sheppard had drive a load of vegeta~

bles to market and was on his way home when the negroes
