"Columbia, S. C., May 15, 1916-Joe Grant, alias Frederick
Brown, a negro convicted on March 10 from Edgefield Coun-
ty, S. C., for the murder of Jesse L. Durst, of Johnston,
Se Ces on April 14, 1906, was electrocuted this afternoon
at 12:28 o'clock, Grant protested his innocence to the
last. Grant, following the killing, went to Philadelphia
where he was located about three years ago and after a
fight against the requisition issued by South Carolina
through through the courts of Pennyslvania into the Uni-
ted States Supreme Court, the negro was brought to South
Carolina. One of the main points made by Grant in the
fight was that he would be lymched if brought to this
state. Governor Manning made a thorough investigation of
the case, respiting the sentence several times and only
came to a final decision this morning," JOURNAL, Altanta
