STRAIN, Nathaniel Henry

Strain, an 18-year-old black native of West Virginia, broke into the
home of Miss Alice Laterbach, a hunchbacked 76-year-old white woman,
known as "The Little Red Hen of Fulton Street," located at 555 East
Fulton Street, Columbus, Ohio, on the night of March 7, 190. After
beating the old woman into submission, he brutally raped her and
stole $300 from the residence, Her body was discovered the next morn-
ing and the coroner's report indicated that she had died of physical
and mental shock brought about by the assault, Strain returned to
West Virginia where he was subseqnently sentenced to a life term in
the West Virginia State Prison as a convicted felon, In 1947, he
became a suspect in the slaying and a detective from Columbus went to
the west Virginia Prison where he interviewed Strain and Strain ad-~
mitted having broken into the house with "two strangers™ but denied
that he had participated in the rape of the old woman, He was unable
to name his accomplices and he was returned to Columbus where he was
tried, convicted without a recommendation of mercy and sentenced to
