killed a white man named John Curtis in
December of 1844. The victim was a rural shoemaker who
was on his way to Lexington in order to purchase cob-
bler's materials. He was found dead in the woods four
miles outside of Lexington, (on the farm of John W. Hunt
Esq. on the Russell Road), bludgeoned and stripped of
his valuables. The killer was found with the victim's
pocketbook in his possession plus a sum of cash like
