"tein 1680 John Williams (colored) was convicted after a'
jengthy trial, of the premeditated and malicious murder
of his wife, and was sentenced to be hanged. The case
was Carried to the supreme court, where the decision of
fhe lower court was affirmed, and Williams was returned
to Waverly, where his death sentence was pronounced. The
day of execution was fixed for May 7 of the same year
and the xpkef place at Waverly. The present sheriff was
in office at that time, and, under his directions, a
xxx scaffold was erected in the court square where the
execution took place as prescribed by law. An inmense
crowd of people came from miles around to witness the
hanging, the poeple being estimated at between 3,000 and
