COEN, Perry Allen
Coen, alias James Allendale, was a 27-year-old white native of Kin-
caid, Kans., who had served in the U. S, Army, beipg stationed in
the Philippines, After he left Kansas, he adopted the name Allendaley
becausc, as he leter claimed, he did not wish to ine mistaken for a
jew. After his release from the service, he remained in California
where he worked at various jobs, finally becoming a parking lot
attendant in Fresno, He became friendly with Gborge Mace Artist,
lO-myears-old, and his white 39~year-old wife, Edna, and was a freauent
house guest at their Hanford, Kings County, home, He developed a
romantic attachment for their samuyime l6-year=old daughter, Isabel,
and evidently felt that the feeling was recipbocated, He arrived in
Hanford on Saturday, Dec, 3, 1927, to,find that she had a date for
that night with a young man nearer her age, Additionally, Mr, Artist
implied that he preferred that the girl go with a younger man, Coen
followed Isabel and her date to the movie that night and sat directly
behind them making various disparaging remarks, Thab night after the
