HELLIER, Thomas August 5, 1678

Hellier, a white man, was born at Whitechurch near Lyme, Dorset-
shire, England. Convicted of theft, he was transported to the
Colony of Virginia as a bound servant, His first
master sold him to Cutbeard Williamson, a planter who owned a
plantation called "Hard Labour" in Charles City County. Hellier
resented his position and being at the plantation where, perhaps,
the name was indicative of the working conditions and one night
as Williamson and his wife lay sleeping, he killed both of them
and their maid with an axe, Convicted and sentenced to die, he
was hanged at Westover, Charles City, near the plantation, on
August 5, 1678, After he was dead, his body was hanged in chains
on Windmill Point on the James River as a warning to other servants

who might consider freeing themselves from bondage by the murder
of their masters and mistresses,
