"Talman bates was the first man to be hanged in Shasta
(Calif.). He was found guilty of the murder of a man by
the name of Mitchell, The murder was investigated and
witnesses testified as soon as Bates was arrested. As
the jury found the defendant guilty, sentence was passed.
Yates was hanged on the spot."
