Treglawn,/born in Cornwall, England, on August 12, 1859, was illiterate
having gone to work in the mines there at an early age. In 1880 he
migrated to the United States and obtained a job working in tthe mines
at Port Oram, New Jersey, He courted Minnie Chirgwin, a Port Oram
girl, and they became engaged but, following a lover's quarrel, she
broke off the engagement and began dating another miner named Henry
James. On the evening of June 20, 1882, Treglawn XSXXSWXREXEKEX
followed them and when he began firing at them with a pistol James ran
away. One of the BREXEX bullets struck the girl in the head and Treg~
lawn dragged her to the.canal and held her head under the water until
She drowned. In spite of the fact that he shot himself and inflicted.
a flesh wound in the head, he managed to avoid arrest until June 2);
when he was taken into custody. Following a trial that lasted for
four days, he was convicted and sentenced to die. A number of petition
for a commutation of his sentence was presented to the Board of Pardons
but they refused to intervene and he was hanged on April 18, 1883, from
a gallows which was brought up from Newark and set up in a structure

in the jail yard at Morristown, The structure was both enclosed and
roofed to prevent any spectators other than those allowed by law and
only 37 persons witnessed the execution,
