MAXWELL, William, Jr.

Maxwell, a 27-year-old black man, Lived with his brother-in-law,
Thomas L. Logan, an the 300 block of Monroe St., South Philadelphia,
Paex On the night of Feb, 27, 1954, they, in company with Rayford
Stevens, Theodore Graves and Buffel Williams, all left Philadelphia
and drove to Chester for the purpose of committing a robbery, They
had no particular target in mind when they stopped at the grocery
store owned by Michael Arcomone, Chester Township Tax Collector, at
the corner of Second and Tilghman Streets. Graves and Williams re-
mained in the car while Logan stood outside as a lookout when Maxwell
and Stevens entered and made a purchase, Maxwell drew a pistol which
had been provided by Logan when Arcomone opened his cash register

and when the grocer struggled with him, Maxwell shot and killed him .
All were arrested shortly afterwards and, on a plea of guilty, Logan
was meted a life sentence, Stevens, who had entered the store with
Maxwell, was also sentenced to life imprisonment following his con-
viction and Maxwell, the actual triggerman, was sentenced to dics
Williams and Graves,placed on trial following the convictions of their
accomplices , were both convicted of second degree murder and each
was sentenced to serve from 10-to-20 years in prison, There was no
appeal and Maxwell was electrocuted at the Pennsylvania State Prison
