Clear, 18=years-old, and Lewis, 17-year-old, were black youths who
lived at Panola, Caroline Co,, Va, They had long heard rumors that
68-year-old Thomas R, Campbell, a white farmer who lived alone, kept
a large sum of money in his house and for over a month they laid
plans to rob him and burn his house to conceal the crime, On the
night of July 30, 1924, around eight o'clock, they went to Campbell's
house, armed with a rifle and a pistol, and forced entry, demanding
that he give then his money, He gave them 50¢, explaining that was
all that MAK¥XMAH he had, and they then beat and tortured him before
shooting him and placing him on the bed which they set on fire, Af-

ter they had fled, Campbell managed to drag his burned body from the
house and struggled through a swamp to the home of a negro farmer who
lived nearby. A physician was summoned but Campbell died the next
day and the doctor subsequently testified that the gunshot wound had
not killed him but that he had died as a result of shock induced by
his burns. After leaving Campbell's residence, Clear and Lewis
