ascending the scaffold the condemned men recuested that
some visiting sheriff be permitted to perfrom the last
duties of the execution as the resident sheriff had been
most kind during their confinement, and they did not wish
him to mar his conduct toward them, In accordance with
their wishes, Sheriffs Dakin and Bennet adjusted the noo-
ses and caps. When the trap fell, Torresdropped with his
neck broken and died in 6rminutes. Soto fainted, presum-
ably from strangulation, and had to be pushed off the
