Anderson, alias Ray Anderson, alias Fred Young, was a 2l.=year-old
Jacksonville, Fla., black man with a record of fifteen arrests..for
crimes including larceny, breaking and entering, concealed Weapons.
and assault with intent to murder. Most of these arrests. had.re....
sulted in convictions and he had served sentences in. the. Jacksonvilke
and Duval County Jails and at Raiford Prison, After his release from
the latter, he teamed up with Jefferson, a 22-year-old black man, and
they embarked on a career of armed robbery and hold-ups. On the
night of Nov, 12, 193k, they robbed a drug store, shot at the owner
and stole his pistol. Two hours later, they caught a taxi to the
store at 102); *lorida Avenue owned by 23-year-old Carl Schuman, a for-
mer star guard on the University of Florida's football team. Schuman
was sLiting in the store discussing wedding plans with his fiance
when Anderson and Jefferson entered, Anderson, using the pistol that
they had just stolen from the drug store, demanded the morany that
Schuman had in the store and when the young athlete resisted, they
