GODFREY, Samuel E,
Godfrey, a prisoner in the Vermont State Prison serving a term for
burglary, killed the keeper, Thomas Hewlett, on Nov. 5, 181).
Godfrey was tried and convicted on three separate occassions before
theee separate panels of judges - in 1815, 1816 and 1817. His first
two convictions were reversed on technicalities, Prior to his execu-
tion, some of his friends sought his permission to attempt ho have his
body’ revived after he was hanged, but he rejected their plan saying
that he had no desire ta return to life once he was dead. Following
a visit to a church where a sermon was held on the way to the gallows,
Godfrey was hanged on the Woodstock Green on Feb, 13, 1818, before a.
crowd of 10,000 persons who had gathered to witness the execution.
