two police officers, one of whom was Joseph Rosenberg, who was instru-

bravely and stood smiling as the black cap was lowered over his face.
The trap fell at 6303 before a large corwd of spectators and his neck

Smart, a 26-year-old white man, was born at Port Fulton, Ind,, the son
of a physician who had, at one time, killed a man but been acquitted,

When Mrs, Smart deserted her husband, she took Harry and his brother,

Charles, with her to Louisville, Ky., where both boys began associating
with rough characters. When Charles suddently died, many thought that
he had committed suicide by poison, while others thought that Harry had
killed him because they were infatuated with the same prostitute, He

was working as a brakeman on the Short Line Railroad when he induced a
1l5eyeare-old girl to marry him but she returned to the home of her fa-

ther two months later when he attempted to force her to become a pros-
titute., They secured a divorce and Harry moved from job to job, still
asscoliating with the town's roughs, one of whom was Charles Dilger who
was ultimately to die on the same gallows with him. He worked at vare-
ious trades, the last being that of house painter, and consorted with

several women before establishing a relationship with MAX}XIXXRAXMAXNE

1888, They shared a room in a filthy tenement located at 110 East Mar~
