HAMMONDS, George and WILSON, Henderson

Hammonds, a 30-year-old black farjer, was a native of Jefferson,

S. Co, while Wilson, a 27-year-old black cook, was a native of
Laurinberg, 5, ©, Both were ex-convicts and after they met while
living in North Yarolina, they conducted several robberiesx together.
On the night of Oct. 31, 1947, they entered the Southmart, N. °.,
store owned by Robert 3, Hayes, a respected black merchant, and when
Hayes resisted their attempt to rob him, they bludgeoned him to
death with an iron bar. When they were questioned, both men con-
fessed but they repudiated their confessions at their trial where
they pleaded not guilty. Both were convicted and they were executed
in North Carolina's gas chamber on June 4, 1918.
