WHITE, Thomas May 1), 1880

"May 1h, 1880-Thomas White, a white man, was hanged at
Spartanburg, S. C., today for the murder of Pete Hawkins,
a black youth, “Lhe\execution took place within the jail
yard, no one being present but relatives of the doomed
man, a guard of ten men, the clergyman and the shierff,
Strenuous efforts have been vainly made to secure clemen-
cy for White, He was calm and collected, mounting the
scaffold with a firm tread and without betrgying the
slightest fear, His last words were that he wanted
everybody to know what whiskey and bad company would brin;
a manj and had it not been for these he would not have
died on the gibbey. He dropped \' 8" and in 8 minutes
