"May 1h, 1880-Thomas White, a white man, was hanged at
Spartanburg, S. C., today for the murder of Pete Hawkins,

Strenuous efforts have been vainly made to secure clemen-
cy for White, He was calm and collected, mounting the
scaffold with a firm tread and without betrgying the

everybody to know what whiskey and bad company would brin;
a manj and had it not been for these he would not have
died on the gibbey. He dropped \' 8" and in 8 minutes
