| bell, convicted, with John Hudson, of the murder and burn-
| ing of the wife of Hudson, was hanged Friday (May 8) at 1
| o'clock by Sheriff J, G. Brown, Although the execution
was in private, an immense throng of people, estimated at
l or 5 thousand, crowded the streets of the city, and lis-
tened to the ding statement of the condemned man, in which
he protested his innocence of thecrime for which he was
convicted, and his confidence that he was going, as he
said, 'where the Sabbath never ends and the congregation
never breaks ups! With remarkable nerve and ealmness, he
stood on his coffin in the midst of the throng about him,
with hat removed, while the photographer snapped his image
before being taken to the gallows, John Hudson escaped
with a life sentence in the penitentiary, where he is now
Serving, and Henry Campbell was convicted and hanged upon
