were returning to Satesville with a wagon train of supplies. About

of robbery. Matthes was shot and died 36 hours later while Harvey
was @ounded after striking Powell over the head with the butt end of
an ox whip. Harvey identified both of the men and Leeper was taken
into custody on the streeés of Gatesville the next day. He told the
officers that Powell was hading on the Buster ranch near Turnersville
and the Sheriff and a posse went there and arrested him as he was
lying in bed suffering from the blow struck by Harvey. Both men
were speedily tried convicted and sentenced to die. Their executionw
was delayed by a series of appeals and Leeper's brother attempted to
bribe a witness to say that he was lying and received a fwo year

the Yheriff to leave the keys to their cell in the lock where they
could escape, but he refused and they were both hanged at Gatesville
