"John Hanner, a negro, was hanged at Paris yester:
day for the murder of Joseph Ellis, colored, July
1, 1887." For two days before the execution Hane
ner refused to eat. He declared his innocence to
his attorney. Just before he was to leave his
cell for the scaffold he tried to borrow a knife
from one of the guards, but was refused. He then
took up a whiskey bottle, broke it, and with one
of the pieces cut the leader in his left leg ae
bove the ankle and a fearful gash in his neck,
narrowly missing the jugular vein. One of the
guards took the piece of glass from him, He was
