Thomas, a 19-year-old native of Holyoke, Colorado, left home when he
was 15~years-old after having failed the eighth grade of school, Af~

the morning of June 11, 191, he was hitch hiking outside of Coeur
d'Alene, taa., when he was given a ride by 26-year-old Robert Smith,
a native of Aberdeen, “ash. , who was headed home beeause of the cri-
tical illness of his mother. Thomas rode with Smith all of the day
and outside of Arlington, Ore., he shot and killed ERS Smith, He
threw the body over an embankment after robbing it of money and cre-
dit cards and drove off in Smith's automobile. He used the credit
cards for gas and wrecked the car at least one time. Smith's father
reported him missing whén he did not arrive hame and his mother died
while police were searching for him. Thomas was taken into custody

that his victim's body was discovered. He was returned to Oregon
where he confessed that he had killed Smith using a gun that he had
