‘For. the first timein the history of ?Baltimore City Jail,
according to Warden Bernard Lee, a woman today witnessed
the hanging of Bishop Hawkins, colored, who was convicted
of murdering his common law wife, Edith Sterling. Her
presence at the execution caused much excitement among the
female prisoners who had been locked in their cells and
who saw her walk across the jail yard among the line of
spectators following Hawkins, More than 100 spectators anc
policemen were present. Prisoners of the Maryland Peniten
tiary lined the windows of the workshops and watched Haw-
kins as he entered the chamber to mount the scaffold, Haw
kins was baptized in the Catholié faith yesterday by Reve
Joseph J. Ayd, of Loyola College, and this morning before
