REYNOLDS, John ("Jack")

Reynolds, a young white man, was a vagrant residing in New York City.
On Sunday evening, January 29, 1870, he had been drinking when he
entered a shoemaker's shop and asked for work, The shoemaker inform-
ed him that he had nothing for him to do and, as he was leaving, Rey-
nolds picked up a long, sharp knife. He walked next door and entered
the basement home of William Townsend, aktailor who also ran a small
grocery shop at his residence, at 192 Hudson Street. He sat down,
informed Townsend who had never seen him before that they were broth-
ers and announced his intention of spending the night. Townsend
told him that they were not brothers and that he could not spend the
house. He then asked Reynolds to"please leave" and Reynolds grabbed
him, dragged him to the steps and stabbed him through the heart in
the presence of Townsend's horrified wife and three small children,

A crowd heard Townsend's screams and rushed to the scene where they
disarmed Reynolds and held him, Townsend was taken inside and died
within twenty minutes. When police officers arrived, a mob had

gathered and was screaming "Hang him} Hang himg" Reynolds replied,

as he was being led away to the police station: "Hanging is played out
