FORD, Robert
Ford, a 2l-year-old black man, was a native of Alabama who moved to
West Virginia and was employed as a coal miner at the Cambria Mines
in Harrison County, He and a 62-yeareold black man, Edward Woody,
who was also a miner had been close friends until toody married a
30-year-old woman and became convinced that Ford was paying undue
attentions to her, On the night of May 15, 1925, Mr, and Mrs, Woody
and Ford were all at the home of another miner ah Cambria and Woody
became incensed when Ford carried a drink of water to his wife, They
. got into an argument and Woody, a small man who weighed only 135
pounds, grabbed a butcher knife and threatened to cut the farm more
powerful Ford who stood well over 6 feet and weighed 222 pounds.
Woody left and went to the home of a friend where he obtained a re~
volver. The next morning, Ford met Woody and a friend walking on a
path and without any exchange of words, drew the revolver and shot
Woody nine times, killing him. After returning the borrowed revolver
to its owner, he fled and was captured late that afternoon at a store
at Marshville. He freely admitted the killing, claiming that Woody
had reached for his hip pocket when they met and that he shot in
self-defense, At his trial, Woody's friend who had witnessed the
shooting said that Woody was unarmed and had made no threatening
motion, Ford denied any intimacies with Woody's wife and said that
