Smith, a 3l<year-old white Van Wert Co., Ohio, farmer residing near
the Indiana Sta te Line had been in trouble since,x while just a boy,
he stabbed another youth in Bobo, Ind. He had served time at the
Indiana State. Boys! Industrial School, the Indiana Penal Farm, the
Indiana State Reformatory, the U. 5. Reformatory at Chillicothe, 0.,
and the Mansfield Reformatory, K&X his crimes including automobile
theft and burglary. Seven weeks before April 18, 193), he was re-
leased from the Mansfield institution and returned to his father's
home. On that date, KSPMEPXSKSHEAEEXE 15-year-old Deputy Sheriff
Forest L. Good, the Sheriff of Van West County and an official of
the Ohio Pardons and Parole Board went to the Smith home to interro~
gate Smith about the theft of grahn from some farmers. ‘Smith ran
and Good overtook him. As the two struggled, Smith pulled a revolv-
er that he had concealed in a holster underneath his pants and EK&
fatally shot the Deputy. He pleaded guilty before a panel of three
judges stating that he had shot @ood because he believed that he
had a chance to escape, and was sentenced to ej he. electric
