Giddings, a leading abolitionist and one of the. founders
of the Republican Party and Benjamin F, Wade, for many >
years a U. S. Senator, defdnding West who pleaded not
guilty by reason of insanity. He was’ condemned ‘to hang
but the Governor granted a respite upon réceipt of a
petition requesting commutation by some of the leading
citizens of Trumbull Co., stating that he would commute
the sentence if over one half of the citizens of the
county would request it. He heard nothing more and
Gardner was publicly hanged before’a crowd of between
12,000 and 15,000 at Warren on Nov. 1, 1833, He met his
death calmly, refusing. a blindfold and insisting on
wearing his beaver hat when the trap was sprung.

| Gardner, a farmer, was born in Massachusetts in 1793 and
moved to Ohio in 1813, S&nally settling in Gustavus Town-
ship, Trumbull Co., where he married Anna Logan. In early
August, 1832, Mrs. Gardner's 16-year-old daughter by a
previous marriage, Frances Maria Buell, who was living wit
them ran from the home with her clothing disarrayred after
her stepfather had attempted to attack her, Gardner im~
plored her to return home and finally she agreed to return
for her clothing. On the afternoon of August 8, she weht
there and West killed her by stabbing her twice in the ab-
domen with a butcher knife. Mrs, West, a neighbor and two
passers-by witnessed’ the killing, and est was taken into

custody almost ammediately. The counsel at the trial held
before two Justices of the Ohio Supreme Court was un=
