WHITE, Henry
White, a 25-year-old black man, had served a term in the Mansfield,
Ohio, -reformatory. After his release on parole, he purchased a pis-
tol and swore to a number of people that he would never be returned
to prison. On Oot. 30, 1906, he and his sweetheart were sitting in
the offices of a traction company in Franklin, Ohio, when the Mayor
of Franklin and City Marshal George Basore passed. They suspected
White of having some stolen goods in his possession and Basore mo-=
tioned for him to come outside. When he reached the doorg he and
Basore exchanged fire and Basore was fatally wounded. White attempt-
ed to flee but was captured and taken to the jail in Lebanon because
of the intensity of local feeling in Franklin, A week before his
trial, White escaped from the jail but was subsequently recaptured
in the lower part of the County where he attempted to hold the posse
at bay with a broken rifle. At his trial, White stated that Basore
had fired first and that he had shot only in self-defense, but the
