office this morning, we learn that Smith, proprietor of the Sea View
House, Neversink, N, J. , who died on Friday night last confessed
shortly before his death that he murdered Albert Morse, his barkeeper,
last August = a deed for which young Donnelly suffered deathes,.."

Donnelly, a young white man, had recently graduated from meflical
college and planned to establish his practice in New Jerseye He was
spending a vacation at the Sea View House in the Navesink Highlands,
Monmouth Co., N, Jes where, being low on funds, he was working as a
part time desk clerk.mm On the night of July 31, 1857, he joined the
hotel bartender, Albert S, Moses, and two guests in a poker game in
ua Moses! room and used some of the hotel's money aS a stake, Donm-
elly lost $55.00 to Moses and early on the morning of August 1, he
Slipped into Moses! room and stabbed him in the neck before stealing
the money, The proprietor of the hotel rushed into the room before
Moses mktixx died and Moses Stated that Bonnelly had killed him,
Others in the hotel said that they had seen Donnelly enter his room
shortly after Moses had been stabbed and emerge a few Minutes later
carrying a bundle which he threw into a river, The circumstatial
evidence,, along with NEXANXSXPE Moses's dying declaration were enough
to convictz him and he was sentenced to die, Five days before the
date set Hor his execution, he managed to escape and was well on his
way to freedom aboard a yacht which some friends had waiting for him
when he was overtaken and captured. He made no further &fforst to
