Arao, a 28-year-old native of Japan, emigrated to the United States
and settled in Spokane, Wash,, where, for several months, he was em=
ployed in his trade as a tailor in the shop owned by a h3-year-old
Chinaman, Sam Chong, located at 325 Main Ave. The two Orientals then
entered into a partnership of sorts with Arao soliciting orders for
clothes, taking them to the shop and then delivering the finished
goods, Arao felt that Chong had dealt unfairly with him in the part-
nership and he moved out and, opened his own tailor ship on Post St,
le continued purchasing goods from Chong but he continued to brood
over what he considered injustices done to him and when he heard that
Chong had told some other Japanese that he did not know where Arao's
shep was located, he became further enraged and determined to kill
Chong. He purchased a dagger, a revolver with bullets, several cans
of lye, all of which he put into a suitcase, On Dec, 28, 190), he
went to KKAMXX Chong&s shop and paid him $9.75 which he owed for
goods and left the bag there overnight. Early the next morning, he
visited a saloon and had several drinks before returning to the shop,

the preceding evening and wanted to search for it, When she went into
the kitchen to prepare breakfast, he went into the bedroom where
