HANNA , John

Hanna, a native of Ireland, had only been in the United States for
a period of about six months and lived in Chambersburg, Pa. A man
named John Devebaugh was led to believe that Hanna had abused his
13-year-old son and when the two men met near the Catholic Church
in Chambersburg, a violent argument over the matter ensued and
Hanna killed Devebaugh by striking him with a stone auger. Tried,
convicted and sentenced to death, there was a good deal of agitation
for a commutation of the sentence because the blow had been struck
in XKX8R& the heat of passion and for a time the Supreme Executive
Council refused to issue a warrant of execution, Finally an order
for Hanna's execution as well as that of Josiah Ramage was issued
and they were both hanged on Gallows Hill in Chambersburg on May
3, 1786. Their bodies were buried in an orchard which had been
frequently robbed and ani observer recorded that the robberies
cessed after their burial,
