"Governor Hugh White Monday granted a 28<day stay for
James Ray, Meridian Negro convicted of murder in the
bludgeon slaying of a 70-year-old grocer in April, 1951,
Ray's electrocution had been set for May 2. White said
he granted the stay because he had not had time to go into
the case. Ray was one of four Negroes convicted of
murder in the slaying of C. W. Mc¥onald in a robbery até-
tempt at McDonald's grocery store. The case drew atten-
tion recently when the State Supreme Court ruled tape
recordings admissable as evidence. The state offered a
tape-recorded statement during the trial which the de-
fense objected toethe three Negroes convicted with Ray
were Renest Woodson, Roosevelt Young and Bryant Moody. .
