BARKAR, Frank

State Reformatory before he joined the U. Sa Army and was assigned
to the Third Infantry, stationed at Fort George Wright, Wash, In
1909 he was at Medical Lake, Spokane, Wash., where he bludgeoned to
death Ira Messenger, a Civil War veteran. Arrested shortly after-
wards, he made a confession in jail that he killed Messenger by
bludgeoning him with an iron pipe after the old man had followed

him uttering vile threats, At his trial, the prosecution contended
that the motive for the murder was robbery though it used Barkar's
confession against him, His conviction was appealed to and affirmed
by the Washington Supreme Court on the grounds that his confession
had been given under duress and that the pemx Lower court should not
have allowed his stained clothes to be placed in evidence against
him without having them chemically tested to ascertain whether or not
the stains were, in fact, blood, He refused spiritual consolation
prior to his execution and walked to the gallows chewing tobacco and

joking with the guards, He was hanged at the Washington State Pri-
