Robinson, a black man, lived near Lincoln , Loudoun “o., Va, One
night in October, 1879, he BXx¥ gambled at cards withs everal other
blacks including Edward Thomas, During the course of the game, he
and Thomas got into an argument and ended up in a fist fight which
Thomas won, The next week, Thomas invited all of the particpants in
the party with the exception of Robinson to a card party at kke his
home, Late on the afternoon of the scheduled party, Robinson noticed
Thomas riding a mule to Lincoln for the purpose of purchasing a jug of
whiskey and he went to his home, secured a rifle and returned to a sex
cluded spot on the road which he knew Thomas would travel in returning
home, When Thomas approached, he stepped from his concealment and
shot him, Thomas, in a dying condition, was found later and before he
expired he made a dying declaration in which he said that Robinson had
shot him, Following his arrest, at his trial and thereafter until his
death Robinson denied that he had shot Thomas and maintained that he
had no knowledgeof the murder, His conviction was not appealed and he
was hanged at Leesburg on April 9, 1880, On the morning of his execu-
tion, his friends were allowed to bring him anything that he desired
in the wy of food and he ate a hearty breakfast, laughing and Soking
with kixx those present, As quickly as he had finished eating, at

6 o'clock in the morning, he was escorted to the gallows and hanged,
