reputable citizen, Elza Morgan, was shot and killed by
Richard Smith, a soldier belonging to the 13th Kentucky
Cavalry, a unit that operated in the Columbia section,
chasing guerilla bands, mostly. Morgan was shot without
warning, and Smith was brought to trial, As it happened
in those days a great deal, a change in venue was asked
claiming that it would be impossible to get a fair trial
where the victim lived, So the change of venue was
