Johnson, a 39-year-old black native of Atlanta, Ga,, was employed as
a walter in Omaha, Nebr., in 1907 when he was arrested for burglariz=
ing a saloon, convicted and Sentenced to the penitentiary, After his
release in July, 1909, he was not seen in Omaha until the night of
Oct. 13, 1909, when max he wad drinking in a saloon with Honry R,
Frankland, a cook from Chicago, who had come west seeking work. JSKK
Though Frankland became intoxicated, Johnson remained reasonably so~
ber and after they left the Saloon, they were seen walking down the
stairs to the railroad track underneath the Tenth Street viaduct.
Shortly afterwards, Frankland was found in a dying condition with his
threat cut in three places and his head practically severed from his
body. Johnson was arrested the next day. HKAXEKS as he attempted to
board a train for Chicago and even though he maintained his iLmmocence
he was positively identified as Frankland's drinking companion and
the man who was seen escorting him down the stairs at the viaduct.
Additionally, his shirt and coat sleeves ware saturated with bhood
and he was identified by the pawnbroker as the man who had pawned
Prankland's watch for $.00, Convicted and sentenced to die, he and
another prisoner, Albert Prince, planned to kill a gaard and escapes ©
