"The first hanging in Chicago, Ill,, as a city took place
on July 10, 180, after a sensational trial on a murder
charge (#The Murder of Mrs, Lucretia Thompson by John
Stone, The charge included suspected rape, Chicago DAILY
AMERICAN, May 7, 8, 9, 1840), The Tribune & Democrat also
gave considerable attention to the case and to the hanging
So great was the excitement that the city was surrounded
with visitors from the surrounding country and a crowd
estimated at over 2,500 including women and children wit-
nessed the execution, huarded by 200 citizens on horses
and 60 armed militia (*The Tribune 6-27 and 7-11, 180;
Daily Chicago American 7-13-1803; Chicago Democrat 7-15-10
