"April 20, 190-Alexander Edwards, colored, aged 33, was
hanged in the Marlboro County (Bennettsville), S. G, jail
yard today for the murder of James Burnett, colored, The
conemend man was tried last Feb, in theCourt of General
Sessions and sentenced by Judge Aldrich, The murder, a
most brutal one, was committed on Dec. 23, 1863, near Clio
in the county. Edwards, who had been employed during the
day on a farm near Bingham, undertook to pilot Burnett to
McColl, They traveled nearly all night by foot and stopped
to rest in a dense wood near Clio, They kindled a fire and
Burnett was sitting near it warming when Edwards slipped up
behind him and struck him two heavy blows on the head with

an axe, and,thinking that he had killed his man, he secure
a pistol and $5.00 in money for his bloody crime, Burnett,
however, was not dead. Regaining consciousness, he crawle
off into the woods, and when found several days later live
