WORKMAN, Herbert H,

Workman, an 18-year-old white native of Tesla, W. Va., was BRAgLoKsd
SRXE a soldier sta tioned in Germany when he was convicted by a Court
Martial of fighting with a civilian. Heturned to Fort Knox, Ky. to
serve his time, he met two other soldiers also serving sentences, Jas-
per Nease and Daniel 7, McPeak. In Marfh, 19)\7, they managed to es-
cape frofi the stockade and hitchhiked a ride with a 26-year-old World
War II teteran, Vernon L, Hodge, Armed with a carbine, the three es-
capees forced Hodge to drive from Jefferson County into Perry County
where they beat him to death and threw his body in the Kentucky River
before stealing his money and automobile. Captured, they were indicted
in Jefferson Co. for a rmed robbery and in Perry Co, for murder, They
were tried first in Jefferson County and all three were convicted and
sentenced to dea th. Nease and McPeak were executed in ae and Work-=
men was electrocuted atnthe Kentucky State Prison on March lh, 199.
