Willis, a 25-year-old black native of Chattanooga, Tenn,, had been
sentenced to the Tennessee State Prison in 1927 after he had kidnapped
and held for $2,000 ransom the.3-year-old daughter of a former Chatta-=
nooga City Commissioner, Early in September, 1933, he joined in a
pad formed by Lonnie Taylor to escape from the prison and when work
was over on the afternoon of Sept. 15, he Taylor and two other priso-
ners hid in the shops until their fellow inmates began eating SUPPErs
