H icks,.a Sturgis @., S. D., white man, with Robert Hicks and William
C, Walker went to the home of an elderly Meade Co. residents John
Meyer, in December, 1693¢ Hicks shot Meyer in. the side and the three
men then. robbed him. ‘rior to their leaving, “icks shot Meyer in the
head to make certain that he was dead, All three were arrested and
Walker confessedbefore the trial and received a ten-year sentence.
Robert Hiéks was sentenced to life imprisonment while Jay Hicks who
had actually shot the old man and w ho was considered the ring leader
was sentenced to death, It was expected that he would offer some re-
sistance from the scaffold but he met his death calmly. He was hanged
in the Meade County jail at Sturgis on Nov. 15, 189). His neck was
not—broken-and he strangled to-death, __
