scaffold with trembling step and told the story of his
crime, saying he was ready to die, Smith killed his step-
father, JamesxSea, at Pekin, Ky., Nov. 28, 1885, by beating
his brains out with an ax while Sea was asleep, Taking the
man, whom he killed for $12, he wrapped the body in a blan-
ket and threw it into the Kentucky River, The crime was
easily traced to him, as he tried to secure the assistance
of his brother to help to commit the murder, Smith was
only 19-years<-old,"
