HOWARD, Albert March 18, 1921
Howard, a black man, arrived in Gonzales, Tex., in October, 1920, with
the Gentry Brothers Show by which he was employed, He was arrested on
charges of theft and carrying a pistol and lodged in the County Jail,
On Oct. 27, 1920, he and another prisoner, Joe Nations, escaped and
while fleeing stopped at the rural home where MEX an elderly white
widow lived alone, They robbed her and Nations assisted Howard in
tying her to a bed post and gagging her after which Howard raped her,
Both were captured on Nov, 1, 1920, at a road camp near Hondo and re-
turned to Gonzales where they were placed on trial in January, 1921,

convicted and sentenced to die while Nations received a 99-year prison
sentence. There was no appeal and Howard was hanged in the Gonzales

of the Gonzales ladies, His last words were: "Gentlemen, this is
caused by running in bad comany, I am not guilty, Joe Nations is
the guilty one, but the law has to take its course,"
