BUCHANAN, Robert
Buchanan,,a 35-year-old black resident of Jackson, Miss., was a
burglar who invariably entered houses through unlocked back doors
which he propped open to assure an easy escape route, Between
two and three o'clock in the morning of April l, 195), he entered
a Jackson House in this manner in which a 30-year-old white mother
of three children, visiting her mother, was sleeping, He went
into the bedroom and when the woman awoke and began screaming,
he choked her, threatening to kill her, until she submitted to
him, After he had finished raping her, he took the moneyfrom
her purse lying by the bed and told her that he would return and
kill her if she m&fexed gave any alarm after he had left, When
she felt that ghe was gone, she went to a neighbor's house where
her mother was visiting and reported the assault. She was taken
to a hospital and was there for several days. Buchanan was arrested
on August 19 in connection with a numberof burglaries that he had
committed and Officers questioned him about the rape, He insisted
that a number of persons, including some black ministers and news-
papermen be summoned and he made a complete confession of all of
his burglaries and the rape before them, At his trial, he was con-=
