murder of Stephen Bowell in Hempstead, L. I., on 3-7-1896
concluded last night at Long Island City. The jury return
a verdict of guilty in first degree after being out 2 hour:
The judge's charge was strongly for conviction, Mayhew re-
marked while jury out he expected to’ be convicted and was
indifferent, John Wayne, accomplice, whose confession se-
cured his conviction, was arraigned at 9 o'clock and plea-~
