"3 .ein this year (1837) occurred the. execution
of Mrs. Hughes, for the murder of her husband,
Being the first criminal execution, and that a
woman, it naturally attracted an immense crowd
of people. The execution took place at the
river bank near where the Kendall House now
stands. The prisoner was seated in a cart and
the rope adjusted by Jesse Jones, deputy
sheriff. The cart was driven from under the
prisoner and she was thus left hanging.
