Butler, a 5'9", 2 32 pound, black native of Washington, D, C., with
Lawrence Davis and Johnnie Strickland, attempted to rob the safe

at the Plymouth Manufacturing Company of MgColl, S. Ce, on the night
of Jan. 2, 1948. They were surprised by the night watchman, Luther
Ransome, who they bound and then bludgeoned to dea th. A set of
burglar tools was found near the mill the next morning that bore
the fingerprints of the three blacks. Davis and Strickland were
captured a few days later in Philadelphia and returned to South
Carolina where Strickland gave State's evidence and received a life
sentence. Davis was electrocuted on NEK¥ Sept. 17, 1948. Butler
was captured later in New Jersey and extradited. Hey too, was
convicted and sentenced to die. He was electrocuted at the South
Carolina State Prison on June 2 , 1950. So powerful was his build
tHhat it was necewsary to administer five shocks of electricity to
kill him. The only words that he spoke in the death chamber were

"Yes, sir' in response to the Chaplain's inquiry as to whether or
not he was saveds
