McQUEEN, Clarence

McCueen, a 38-year-old black resident of Cynthiana, Harrison Gol, Aves
was arrested by Federal agents for violation of the Federal prbhibi-
tion laws and carried to Lexington for trial before the U, S, District
Court. He made bond and returned to Cynthiana where he made numerous
threats to kill the persons who had KH tipped off the Federal agents
about his activities, On the afternoon of April 25, 1927, he drank
two pints of moonshine whibkey and armed himself with his shotgun,
announcing that he was going down to the river to shoot ducks even
though the hunting weason HHXXAM had past. ‘When he reached the river,
he encountered Lewis Williams, also black, who was sitting on the
bank talking with another man, McCueen told Williams that he had
informed on him and that his "time had come," Williams stood up and
asked to be allowed to go get his gun and McQueen shot him in the
back. He then reloaded his shotgun and fired kk another load into
Williams! back, McCueen walked back to town boasting that he had

to kill the other also but he was arrested before he could follow
through with his threat, At histrial he testified that Williams

had gone for a knife and that he had fired in self-defense, This was
