land, but he was well-known on both sides of the Rio Grande as'a
daring rider, a deadly shot, a gambler, a drinker, a cutthroat and
a guitar player.'' On the night, of Nov, 1, 188, he and two of his
companions stole three horses in Del Rie and rode than to the store
located at Mud Creek, Kinney Co,, which was operated by Peter John-
som, Johnson, already in bed, was persuaded to open the sdbre by
their claims of being customers, After they had obtained admittance,
they bound Johnson's hands behind his back and, in addition to loot-
ing the safe, took some carbines, ammuntion, boots and blankets. As
they left the premises, Gonzales turned and shot Johnson through the
head the prevent his being identified, Gonzales and his companions
ghen parted and the other two men crossed to Mexico and were never
