ALLEN, Jack

Allen, a white native of England, was a sailor who left his ship and
went to Jeffersonville, Sullivan Cosy Ne Yes where he began a new
career as a farm laborer, Aperiodic drunk who was considered a dan-
gerilous man when he was intoxicated, Allen believed that Mrs, Ursula
Ulrich, an elderly widow who lived alone in her house on Hubert Road,
Jeffersonville, kept a large sum of money there. In October, LOOT s
he borrowed amit a pistol and went there with the intention of robbing
the old lady. When she resisted, he shot and killed her but in his
search of the premises found only $5.00, He made little effort to
cover his tracks and when her body was discovered 3arkexy that evening,
he-was trailed by a search party carrying lanterns and taken into
custody. Convicted and sentenced to die, he was hanged at Monticello
on July 20, 1888, When the hangman went to place the noose o¥er
Allen's head, his hands were Shaking and Allen placed the noosed over
his own head and adjusted ite He then asked for a drink of whiskey
and, when this was refused, uttered his last words: "Let ‘er B20,
Gallagher}"
