area populated almost exclusively by blacks, In Sept., 1905, a white
man named J. F. Condit rented some land in the area and moved there
with his wife, Lora, and their children, 12-year-old Mildred, 10-
year-old Herschell, 6-year-old Jesse, 3-year=old Joseph, and 10-montl
old Lloyd, Condit hired Gibson to clear some land for him thile he
was working some distance away in a rice hartest, Around noon on
Sept. 28, Gibson reported to some blacks that he had seen two men
chasing Mrs, Condit and they sent him to the nearest white neigh-
bor's house to report the affair to him, When the white man went to
the Condit farm, he found Mrs. Condit bludgeoned to death with an
aXe adz, Middred raped and killed by having her throat cut, Joseph
with his throat cut so deeply that his head was almost severed from
his body, and Jesse and Herschell, some distance from the house,
both dead from having been bludgeoned by an iron bar, Gibson, who
was covered with blood, was taken into custody and charged with the
crime, Because of the intensity of local féeling, he was taken out
of the County for safekeeping and managed to break away from the
Sheriff,
